Welcome to our English Language Arts classroom in Michigan. Our high school is tucked in the pines of the beautiful and remote Upper Peninsula. My students are quirky, fun, and high energy.
I teach 10th through 12th graders whose interests range from playing sports to participating in drama camp to showing farm animals at the county fair.
Our school is categorized as high poverty. All students are offered free breakfast and lunch, and I am thankful that they don't have to worry about what they will eat and instead can focus on what they will learn.
My Project
Our high school no longer has a functioning library, so it is of the utmost importance to me to provide a classroom library for my students. With 130 plus students borrowing books from my room on an ongoing basis, you can imagine the difficulty in keeping the shelves stocked with high-interest reading. I strive to include diverse books where every student can see themselves in the pages.
Currently, I have one bookcase in my classroom; I need another so that I can provide students with the latest novels.
I am also requesting paint and a paintbrush so that I can paint the old shelf black to match the new one.
The books picked here are selections from the Project LIT Book Club. Titles include Laurie Halse Anderson's "Shout," Nic Stone's "Odd One Out," Ibi Zoboi's "Pride," and more!
In addition, I am requesting bulletin board materials. Usually, I decorate the boards, but this year, I want to give ownership to the students so they really see themselves in our classroom. They will be encouraged to post their artwork, poetry, book recommendations, photos, and more.
