I See Me: In My Reading!

Help me give my students the ability to see themselves in our library collection. I am trying to obtain books that represent and value the rich multicultural makeup of our school.

My Students

We are a Title I school in a highly transient area of a military town. My students are all second and third graders in a neighborhood that struggles economically. Nearly one hundred percent of our students qualify for free lunch and breakfast. That, however, does not diminish their enthusiasm for learning, especially when it relates to things they are passionate about!

Our student population has become increasingly diverse in recent years.

They are smart and very capable students with a true love of learning through real experiences. The economic challenges do, however, have an impact on what they have available to help them learn. These are changing times, and we have to constantly look for new ways keep students engaged and build skills which will prepare them for potential careers.

My Project

It is important for readers to be able to identify with the characters in the literature they choose. There are so many titles being published now that value and respect how diverse our society has become. I would like our library collection to better represent the diversity of our student population.

It is important for students to see themselves in the stories they read and to learn to empathize with those who are unlike themselves.

This is what a well-written book can do!

The books on this list are meant to be mirrors for students to see a reflection of themselves. They are also windows to help students better understand their world and the people they share it with.
