This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Can you remember the time you first were hooked on a book? I want my students to experience the joy of reading as well!
I'm so excited to be teaching 6th grade this year.
I have some very eager students who cannot wait to read and learn. One may think teaching in a public school downtown would be rough, but actually my students are like little sponges that are willing to soak up any and all information. I love them and want them to have a lot of options for choice books that are culturally relevant.
My Project
During this school year, my students will be reading choice books and guided reading books. Most public school libraries do not have main characters that are African American, so I want to fill my library with books that my students can see themselves in.
These small text sets will be used for literary circles and guided reading.
I specifically picked social justice books that were very popular with my students last year. They contain stories that are focused on overcoming odds, growing up, and social justice issues.
It's always such a battle getting students to pick a book that they actually want to read. I really hope this project will be funded so I can use the books to show my students that they too have stories that can inspire them.
