Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 28 amazing dual fourth graders that love to read. They are my little bookworms. They love to learn about the world around them, how things work, and most of all enjoy seeing characters in books that represent their culture. Their faces light up the room when we read picture and chapter books and it makes my day as their teacher when I see their excitement on their faces. This group of students are the pioneers of this dual immersion program at the school and they come from culturally diverse backgrounds.
My students would be ecstatic if they were to have multicultural books that represented their traditions, culture, and customs.
This is extremely important especially, when it creates student empowerment, increases their sense of self-worth, helps shape their values, develops their critical thinking skills, builds empathy, and helps them develop their biliteracy.
My Project
These diverse books will help promote inclusion, value, and importance in each one of my student's culture. It will empower my students as they see characters that represent them through these picture books and help them develop their bilingual skills such as reading, listening, and speaking in both Spanish and English. I plan to use these books also as mentor texts for writing and reading workshops. By exposing students to a variety of voices and styles of writing, I hope it creates their own unique writing voice and style. By seeing and listening to books they can relate to, students will feel inspired to develop great writing. It is important to expose them to new ideas, thoughts, and experiences that may differ from their own so they can develop empathy and understanding towards others which is what I hope to achieve.
