My Project

I work at a very diverse Title 1 School in North Las Vegas, Nevada. My project is to provide my students a more diverse selection of books in my kindergarten classroom. Students love to read books where the characters reflect themselves. These books allow students to find characters they can relate to, but also give them opportunities to learn about others. Having access to this selection of books will allow my students to make connections to characters and events and will deepen the conversations they have. Many of these books have historical information that will help students to better understand what has happened in our country. It will allow them to see the changes that have been made and make those deep connections to their own life. These books will be shared with all teachers at my school.

Teaching students how to be inclusive and to value one another despite differences in skin color, race, religion, language or any other variable, is a really important part of a child's education.

Offering a diverse selection of books is needed in my classroom. These books will teach students about being kind to all people and show that people are the same no matter what their skin color is. With the growth of globalization, it is important for students to be able to work with diverse groups of people. Teaching diversity prepares students to be global citizens by exposing them to people from different cultures and social groups. I have also requested multicultural crayons and colored pencils. We will be working on several projects throughout the year where these materials will be used. From open house self-portraits, birthday cards and multicultural projects all supplies will be used in no time! Thanks for your consideration of my Donors Choose project.
