Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My second graders attend an inner-city Title I school. At our school, all of the students receive free breakfast and lunch so they can focus on learning while they are in class. One-third of my students are English Language Learners which means that on top of learning the content for second grade they are also working hard to master English. My students are fun loving and eager to learn, and I am just as excited to teach them this year!
My Project
As I organized my classroom library, I realized something troubling. My chapter book selection was slim and the chapter books I did have did not represent my students. My students work hard to improve their reading throughout the year and they deserve challenging books full of characters they can relate to.
My students love to read and my classroom library needs to reflect the diversity of my class.
Books with characters from different cultures and backgrounds will not only engage my students, but will help build a class community that is understanding and accepting of differences. These books will help students make connections to characters in literature that might not have happened with other books. Your donations will allow my students to cozy up with books that are reflections of them during their independent reading time.
