Help me give my students the opportunity to be mindful and see themselves as capable of managing difficult emotions. I want to support my students' social-emotional development by instilling the love of who they are.

This is my 17th year as an educator. I started my career as a special education classroom teacher and have been working as a school social worker for the past 11, and yoga teacher for the past year. I have the honor of supporting the needs of students, families, and staff at two schools on Staten Island. My schools are high poverty schools in New York City. All of our students receive free lunch. Ninety-seven percent of our student population is Black or Latino; many are first-generation Americans. Many of my students are transitioning from homelessness and or living in temporary housing. Many of my students have experienced a traumatic event that threatened their sense of physical security. Thirty percent of our students receive Special Education services. Despite the challenges they face daily, my students are sweet, silly, creative and talented beings. As an educator that practices mindfulness and yoga, I know the physical and mental benefits. I teach mindfulness and yoga to my students so they learn how to pay attention to the relationship between their mind and body. The yoga program that I facilitate offers students the opportunity to build strength, flexibility, balance and mental focus.
As the school social worker and yoga teacher, I am committed to ensuring that children from communities of color have access to the mental and physical benefits of mindfulness and yoga. My students will benefit from the requested mindfulness tools by learning how to manage difficult emotions in a fun, safe and healthy way. The tools will support me in teaching children to be mindful. The activities will allow the students opportunities to calm their bodies and minds so they can tackle the various demands placed on them. The Mindfulness and yoga resources that I have requested will aide in teaching students skills that will improve focus, memory, self-esteem, academic performance, and classroom behavior, and can even reduce anxiety and stress in children. This tools requested in this project are diverse and are needed to further support my work with students in the classroom, during groups and counseling sessions. Students will mindfully create art projects, listen to stories about children who look like them that are practicing mindfulness and yoga and then be able to engage in mindfulness and yoga themselves.
