My students are bright, energetic, and eager scholars who are ready to learn. My students are from an urban setting in Wisconsin. Over 90% of the students at my school come from economically disadvantaged households as determined by the state. For many, poverty has a profound impact on their lives but it should not hold them back from success. Their success in school is very important to me. Through DonorsChoose.org, the scholars that I work will have what they need to be successful.
My Project
My students need books that reflect who they are and the lives they live. Not only is it important that the classroom library has books in which the characters are culturally diverse but the themes/ideas need to be culturally authentic as well.
The classroom library needs to contain books that highlight authentic cultural experiences and real life situations that my students and their families are going through.
My students need to see themselves in books, not just in a generic way, but in a deeper and more meaningful way. When students are able to connect with the text it helps them become better readers.
