Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are energetic and amazing kids from the southside of Chicago. Most of the kids I teach are faced with challenges in their lives, both at home and at school. As their music teacher, I hope to help my students by encouraging them to express themselves in positive ways.
My students love music class because they get a chance to share a creative experience with their peers.
Our school is run on a bare bones budget, and funding for the arts is just not there. Your donation would help to provide a quality musical experience for deserving students.
My Project
I am requesting 4 microphones to have at the ready for my special needs students, who adore singing into a mic. I am also requesting a book that will teach basic music theory to this class, and some sensory toys that will help them to stay calm during music class.
The classroom I am writing this proposal for has 8 students, and each one of them has been diagnosed with a form of autism or developmental delay.
Most of the students in the room are non-verbal, but a few weeks ago I let them use a microphone. They absolutely loved hearing their voice amplified, and it really motivated them to sing and speak.
Unfortunately, the microphone we have been using was on its last legs and finally broke. The students were so upset when they didn't see it the next time they had music class! If this project is funded, my special needs students will be able to continue their exploration of their voices using a microphone.
Working with this group has helped me to grow as an educator, and they have helped me to think outside the box. These kids deserve to hear themselves singing loud and clear. I really think it helps boost their love of music, and their self-esteem, to use the microphone. They feel like rock stars! Please help my students continue to discover more about music and more about themselves.
