My students are inner city students who are learning how to transition successfully from middle school to high school. They are Grade 9 students who are working hard to be on-track for sophomore year -- in attendance, behavior, and academics! My team of Grade 9 teachers has found that so many of our freshmen do not yet understand how missing school and failing a class in any quarter affects their ability to stay on-track for the next grade level.
Students at our school are extremely diverse, and come from many different middle schools across the district.
We are a magnet school that specializes in business, technology, and health sciences. In sophomore year, all students are required to select a pathway. Our Grade 9 students take classes in all of the magnet areas, so they can make informed decisions about their lifelong goals!
My Project
Our students were presented with the criteria for being on-track for sophomore year at the beginning of the year, and we had an assembly during Quarter 3 to celebrate the students who are on-track. Students work extremely hard by attending school, working closely with teachers and passing freshman courses. A group of 50 freshmen receive additional supports from an On-Track Coordinator, and this educator helps the students get on-track. At the end of Quarter 3, 75% of these freshmen were on-track in passing their classes. We are planning an ice cream social celebration to recognize these students who worked hard to improve their grades and attendance. At the celebration, we will raffle Amazon gift cards to students in the following areas: attendance, on-track in grades, and “on-a-roll” for showing improvements this year. For Quarter 4, students will continue to work hard towards their goals so that every student finishes strong and on-track to a successful sophomore year!
