I have a classroom of twenty 4 year olds who are VERY active learners. They come to school from varied backgrounds. They are bright, energetic, and so full of untapped potential. Tapping into the potential of our future scientists, doctors, lawyers, police officers, firefighters, archaeologists, or teachers is my joy and privilege. I get to know all of my families each year. I see them each day. I go into the homes of these amazing children and and see the quality of learning that exists in each home. All of my students are at-risk for learning problems later on due to a variety of factors, including extreme poverty. I believe each and every one will be a success in their life to come. Our school has a very high poverty rate. Despite financial cuts, I am a firm believer in sensory and STEM in preschool. I believe they not only benefit from it, they deserve it!
My Project
I would like my students to experience a light table and manipulatives where they can use manipulatives to count, build, trace, learn about scientific principles of light energy and receive a total sensorial learning experience . A light table is an amazing technological learning tool that I always wished to have as a Pre-K teacher, and as a child, ever since my first Lite Brite fell apart from overuse. We all remember the hours of fun with that simple light up peg board. Multiply that by a hundred then add all the materials you can use and the versatility of the color changing light table. This would give new definition to "seeing the light" come on in Pre-K. It would stimulate creativity, take learning to another dimension and enhance the beauty and fun of our learning environment as the shadows of letters, numbers, shapes, and words are cast on our walls. Children at age 4 are fascinated with light, shadows, transparency and translucency. A light box would get them engaged at optimum levels. And most importantly my littles deserve this kind of fun learning.
