This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income part of a large city, my students are faced with many struggles each and every day. School should not be a struggle. School should be a place of learning and adventure. I work hard to ensure this is achieved.
My students are energetic, highly creative, and eager to learn.
I was encouraged by my parents and teachers to always do my best. I knew I was going to go to college. I fear that this isn't the same for my students. Many of them are reading below their current grade. Many of my students are in jeopardy of repeating their current grade. Many of my students do not get any help with school work or projects because there isn't anyone to help them at home. I have to be the person to get their reading levels up, pass mandated state testing, and help with homework and school projects. I will work to inspire my students to want to achieve greatness!
My Project
My students struggle to see math as numerical relationships instead of rules and procedures. By having the rekenrek counting frames at hand, my students will be more engaged and increase their interest and excitement about math. I will be able to use the magnetic counters to help a small group wherever we are in the classroom.
All students have the capability to be amazing math thinkers!
We are implementing number talks to improve students’ abilities to communicate about math, use a variety of strategies to solve problems, and think flexibly with numbers. These materials will be used daily to help reinforce math concepts. Having these materials will help my students grow as mathematicians!
