I Reckon My Students Need Rekenreks

My Students

Every day, I have the joy of creating memories of success, failure, and perseverance while teaching kindergartners the joys of learning.

My kindergartners want to be the best that they can, yet our state is 51st in school funding.

We are a Title I school, where everyone receives free breakfast and most receive free or reduced-price lunch. Many of my students come from trauma-filled backgrounds, low-income​ families, and will be the first to go to college. Despite these struggles, my five-year-old scholars are still inquisitive. They are full of questions, from the iconic "Why is the sky blue?" to the question I was asked the other day, "Why do apples come in different colors?" I want my students to further their curiosity by learning how to read, write, do math, and be knowledgeable about the world. Furthermore, I want them to go home and share their learning with their families.

My Project

Rekenreks are math tools to allow my kindergarten students to grasp early math skills such as place value, number concepts, and addition skills.

Rekenreks will allow my young scholars to "see" numbers within other numbers.

The requested rekenreks are wooden, which will make it easy to sanitize between groups; I teach math in small groups to meet my students' needs.

After working with the rekenrek, my students will be able to transition to a number line. The requested number lines provide individual practice with both jumping forward (addition) and jumping backward (subtraction).
