My students need the books they want! Seriously, this is a request directly from them and we need you to make these book dreams come true!
The library is literally the center of our school community. An open, warm and inviting space with vaulted ceilings and floor to ceiling windows that look out upon the playground. This is the space where 600+ students from Head Start, Developmental Preschool on up to sixth grade gather once a week. Some come to the library to rest, some engage with books while others create projects or dive into technology.
Our students deserve every opportunity to succeed.
Our neighborhood consists of immigrants, refugees, working class, middle class, and the working poor.
We are African-American, African, Latinax, Asian, Southeast Asian, Vietnamese, Pacific Islander, Samoan, Somali, Native American and white. 78.6% of our students receive free and reduced lunches. 99.9% of our students love the library.
This project is a direct request from students who use the library. This is their requests, hand written and submitted to me on all types of paper, which I format into a list and then present to you. All year long the library gets requests for books that fall through the cracks or we are simply unable to fulfill. These are the books they ask for, which we then have to deliver disappointing news.
My budget is slimmer than slim and this project does not pretend to know what they want, this is exactly what they --the students-- want!
These are students who utilize the library all the time as opposed to just randomly, maybe being interested in a book.
The books listed here will be protected, barcoded and placed on our shelves for years to come. Hundreds of students will have access to books they wouldn't normally get access to through our school library. Help us say, "Your book has arrived!" before the end of the school year, for these students who specifically request books they love. The individual quantity of the books in this project is based on the popularity of a title and/or the number of requests.
