My students need books for emergent readers that give them a choice of topics to read about, at just right levels that boost their confidence as readers.
Do you remember the first time you knew what you wanted to be when you grew up? For many people, this realization happens as early as five years old, when the desire to paint, help animals, make music, dance, sing, or explore is fostered by experiences and grown ups that encourage young learners' interests. Sometimes it is a child's first trip to a zoo, aquarium, or theatre that inspires a life-long journey. It is this type of learning that drives our kindergarteners to "think outside the box." They come from a variety of ethnicities, socioeconomic backgrounds, and life experiences. It's our responsibility to expose them to the world around them in as many ways as possible. As new readers, they seek engaging books about topics they love to read for longer periods of time.
My Project
By providing a variety of books on various topics and levels, students will be encouraged to take risks as readers and will be able to make connections to texts as they ask answer challenging questions. They will be able to build self confidence as readers, recognizing sight words, and will want to try more challenging texts. This sense of empowerment is ultimately what I want my young readers to experience, and by contributing to this projects, supporters are providing the tools to do so. Together, we are laying the foundation for them to reach higher, go further, and think more deeply. This foundation will help them grow in numerous ways.
