Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you imagine having a desire to read, but not having any books around that you can read on your own. Well that's what it's like for my students.
My students attend a Tittle One school where 75% of students receive free or reduced lunch.
Most of my students are English language learners who live in one of the toughest neighborhoods in Southern California. Despite this they are eager and enthusiastic about school. My students enjoy reading and listening to books. They love borrowing books from the school library and trading books with one another. They also enjoy reading to one another and acting out their favorite parts of a story.
My Project
My students need the King Series books, which is a collection of books for beginning readers, leveled books and a collection of Dr. Seuss books. These books will be used on a daily basis during small group instructions to target specific reading skills that students need to master. With the use of these books students will learn grade level skills such as one to one correspondence, the alphabetic principal, and basic decoding skills. These resources will not only provide my students with the opportunity to receive reading instruction at their instructional level, but will also provide an opportunity for them to read books at their independent level. Having books that students can read independently eliminates frustration allowing them the opportunity to read books with ease, and fostering their new found love for reading.
