Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
All 125 of our amazing Pre-K and Kindergarten students come to school eager for what they will learn each day. Their love of learning is absolutely contagious and exciting!
Our school motto is "Caring for Children Today, Creating Leaders for Tomorrow." I consider it one of my life's greatest blessings to be able to work alongside the best student scholars and educators in the country to help care for our students today while creating leaders for tomorrow!
HAS, my home for the last fourteen years, is committed to providing its students with all of the resources that are needed to engage students in rigorous, dynamic and inspirational instructional activities. There may be times when we do not have what we need, but we have taken on the "We can't yet..." not a "We can't..." attitude. All of the resources we want to provide to our students are available to us through the magic of DonorsChoose.org thanks to donors!
My Project
Students begin reading way before they can read the actual words on a page. In our Pre-K and Kindergarten classes we begin with emergent readers. These are texts that the teacher reads aloud daily for a week with the students prior to putting them into their book baskets. During this time the class focuses on the enjoyment of the text, making the words and pictures match, speaking like the characters, and reading more and more text such as dialogue together.
Emergent storytelling experiences nurture children’s meaning-making and joyful engagement with books prior to conventional reading.
We know that “children are always ready for something and our most effective teaching meets them where they are and nudges them toward what might be next.” We need enough books for the students to be able to hold the text in their own hands daily during independent reading time so they can read and reread the book by themselves.
