Help me give my students the ability to comprehend. Many of my scholars are struggling in the area of comprehension. They have the ability to read the words on the page but cannot explain the story they read.
We are a public charter school in an inner-city neighborhood with very limited funding. One hundred percent of our students qualify for free and reduced price lunch, and many have faced more hardships at age six than some people will face in a lifetime. Yet, despite all of the challenges my students face, they come to school each day with big smiles on their faces. They are motivated and excited to learn.
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom we are on the move.
Making school fun while learning is all I really want for my students. By making school a place they want to go I am hopeful to inspire our learners to continue to love school and move forward with a positive attitude
My Project
I chose to request Reading Comprehension Pratice Cards and Boost Comprehension Small-Group Teaching Center that I can use in small group with my students. During our small group time we read a story together. These stories all my scholars can read. The moment I start the comprehension questions though, I get the blank stares. I plan to use these materials everyday with all scholars to better teach how to comprehend what we have read together. And give them the skills they need to understand how to comprehend texts on their own while they are reading. The goal is with having the teaching comprehension set, all my students will become as close to grade level readers as possible.
