I Read It, But What Was It About? Improving Comprehension
My students need interesting materials to boost reading comprehension. I have requested small group sets of activities that will help the students improve.
"Education is the most powerful weapon one can use to change the world."--Nelson Mandela.
Equipping students to be be strong readers and productive adults is the goal that I have every day when I enter my classroom. i want students to leave with the knowledge that they can do anything they want.
I teach 3rd grade in a Kindergarten through 3rd grade center with approximately 225 students.
Our students have rich cultural backgrounds that include Native American, Micronesian, and Hispanic. Students are predominately from lower economic homes, with many being single parent families. We are located in a small community in NE Oklahoma.
My Project
Twenty-two students with twenty-two different needs at all times and one teacher; this combination makes it difficult for everyone to be actively engaged and learning. I teach students in small groups as much as possible, but need some items to help keep the other groups working at their seat. These resources will allow the students at their seat to have a variety of activities to work on to help improve their reading comprehension. Activities will enhance students' learning of cause/effect, main idea, predicting, and story structure. Each resource that I requested has multiple copies. This will allow students to not only work with me, but will allow opportunities for peer tutoring, cooperative learning, and boost self esteem by "teaching" their classmates. This is especially important as this is the first year that these students will be required to take state assessments.
Students will become better prepared to take state reading assessments and to understand what they are reading more efficiently.
If a student is not reading on grade level by the end of third grade in our state, then they are retained. These materials will help students to improve their reading abilities so that they will be able to be successful on these tests and in life.
