My students need headphones and flannel board materials to help bring favorite stories and characters to life while enhancing literacy and strengthening pre-reading skills.
Our children are amazing 3, 4, and 5 year olds that reside in Fayette County. Our multi age, inclusionary classrooms are geared for children learning through hands-on, active learning.
Our children have such potential to become successful life long learners.
They demonstrate excitement and curiosity when it comes to learning in the classroom. With ongoing parental engagement and community support, they can become the successful individuals we know they can be.
Our community is classified as rural and has experienced some unfortunate changes in demographics over the past decade. Over 90% of our students have qualified for our program by meeting federal poverty guidelines. Many of the students/families deal with food insecurity, poverty, and homelessness.
Despite the challenges they face everyday, our children want to learn and are excited about any new opportunities they are offered!
My Project
We are finding that due to community challenges children are not exposed to quality literature before beginning their kindergarten year. It is my goal to provide a wide variety of literacy activities in my Head Start classroom. My students need headphones and flannel board materials to increase their literacy skills.
I believe setting up a literacy/listening center using digital books and headphones will help promote language and literacy growth.
The flannel board materials will encourage story retelling among peers. These materials together will foster development in school readiness and allow the children to be more successful when entering K-6. In addition, exposure to quality literature will nurture a life long love of books and reading.
