I-Pad/Tablet for Kids With Autism

My students need an Ipad to help achieve their academic, social and behavioral goals. Technology is their future and giving them the tools they need early will only help.

My Students

Some of the challenges students with autism face include having social, communication, academic and behavioral deficits. Many students with autism learn best visually and benefit from using technology. Having technology such as an Ipad helps them to learn in an alternate way.

The students that are in my classroom are fifth and sixth graders that all have autism.

They all are so unique and have the best personalities which makes having autism a small part of who they are. They attend a public k-8 school where they are included in the general education classroom when possible. Currently almost all of my student's are in the general education for at least one class even if it is just art or P.E. My kids often struggle with learning in a lecture type environment and I like to think that we find ways to learn that are outside of the box by doing hands-on lessons as well as lessons that are technology based. Many of my kids biggest joys are being on the computer, using a phone or using an Ipad. Currently we are fortunate enough to have 5 classroom computers but, with the common core curriculum coming we are hoping to extend our classroom technology to include an Ipad for the class.

My Project

Donating to this project will benefit the students I currently have as well as those to come. The fact that my students have autism is a small part of who they are and I like to give them every opportunity to succeed. That is where the Ipad comes into play. Having a classroom Ipad will not only help the students by giving them the opportunity to learn in different ways but, it also will help to encourage them to work to have time on the Ipad. The Ipad also allows staff to do better data collection so that we can see where deficits are occurring for our students.

This project is important because I think that my students deserve every opportunity to succeed and this is just one more step in the right direction.

I think that my students can do great things if given all the tools they need. I hope that I can give them these tools by getting more technology into our classroom.
