Help me give my students a tree swing, storage bench, swing hangers, and brackets for a place to play that is accessible for all students with varying abilities. These items will support my students with physical limitations.
I have the privilege to teach and mold some of the sweetest 3-5 year olds you will ever meet. They learn how to play, socialize, read, and write a little bit differently than most students. Some are not able to communicate the traditional way. They each come into my classroom with struggles of their own.
It is my job to love and encourage them that they can do anything that they put their mind to.
Even though the educational world labels them "special" they are no different to those who work with them daily. They deserve to experience life like everyone else. Their hearts are so big and they love whoever walks into the class. Being their teacher, it is my job to teach them; however they have taught me so much about how to treat and accept others.
My Project
Children need time to play. These children are no different. They need a play area that is accessible to them. Their bodies need time to move unconfined to their wheelchair. This is why we want to provide them with an outdoor swing.
This swing is designed so that all children, no matter their limitations, can enjoy the outdoors!
Furthermore, research indicates that soothing and repetitive motions, such as swinging, have been proven to calm and regulate sensory needs and over stimulation in children with increased sensitivity and inability to self-regulate or calm themselves. This increases student focus, attention, enhances relational bonds with teachers and caregivers, and improves functional skills.
The storage bench will serve two purposes for our students. It will allow us to store and protect the playground items our students use such as sensory balls, items for our sand box, and other outdoor items from the weather. It also will serve as a bench for my students. It will provide them a place to rest, to socialize with other peers, and a place to cool off from the heat.
