Mrs. Bouquet from Philadelphia PA is requesting classroom basics through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need basic classroom supplies like crayons, dry erase markers, pencils, and paper in order to succeed in writing! I am also requesting a laminator in order to create learning centers for my class!

I have a classroom of 27 beautiful, eager, and loving kindergarteners! Many do not have stable lives at home, and as our school is in a fairly dangerous neighborhood of Philadelphia, most have experienced varying levels of trauma as well. 100% of my students receive free lunch.
Despite this instability outside of school, together we have created an environment of learning based on trust and love inside our classroom.
Our mantra is, "We try our best!" and at any given moment you can hear students encouraging each other with these kind words. Although, we are a kindergarten classroom, in many ways we operate like a first grade. Each day we have 90 minutes for both math and literacy, 60 minutes for science, and 45 minutes for social studies, as well as art, music, or gym each day. Studies have shown there is a 30 million word gap between low income children and their wealthier counterparts by the age of kindergarten, and in our classroom we work hard to equip every child with the education necessary to bridge that gap.
I am requesting two different types of things for my class this fall. First, I am asking for basic supplies for my class. This includes crayons, pencils, lined story paper, and dry-erase markers. These supplies are extremely important to one specific mission in my classroom, writing! Many of my kindergarteners come to school in the fall and do not know how to write. This is why I am requesting many different writing materials. It can sometimes be easier to write on a wipe-erase board (with a dry-erase marker) than it is to write on paper. Dry-erase markers certainly make it easier to make and correct mistakes- something that is a common occurrence your first year of school! The crayons will help my writers who do not know how to form words yet- they will begin the year drawing stories and eventually labeling their creations! The pencils and paper are an easy guess as they are the most basic necessity in a writing curriculum and even in kindergarten they are a huge part of our day!
Most of my students do not have school supplies at home- which means they have not had the opportunity to learn to write before entering my class.
It is important to me that my students have the supplies they need in order to become amazing writers!
The second type of thing I am requesting is a tool to help me create learning experiences for my class- a personal laminator and laminate sheets. Much of our class time is spent working in small groups at centers. These centers are mostly created by myself- and when they can be laminated they last much longer. This also makes them compatible with dry-erase markers, which saves paper!
