My students love to learn new things and so do I. This summer I will have the opportunity to learn how to teach them computer science. I am really excited to learn how to teach a computer science class in detail and I am sure they can not wait to learn.
We have been learning little bits of coding and computer science throughout the school year, however, we have not gone into detail from start to finish in learning computer science.
This upcoming school year, my middle school students know this is coming and have been asking me if we are going to and when we are going to learn these skills. I teach children with special needs. They are severely delayed in all areas of academics, however, they seem to be "gifted" when it comes to picking up anything technology related. I know teaching computer science will be harder than if I were teaching a room full of general education students, but I am and they are ready.
My Project
I need training for computer science content and materials. I want to be able to let my students have the same opportunities as the other students in their school. We are a self-contained part of the school and not in the general population. My students are in separate classrooms because of their severe special needs. They see what goes on by looking at the boards on the walls, they hear the talk in the classrooms and see the work in the classrooms. When they see something they think looks like fun and ask if we can do it, most of the time they are told we don't have access to that. They become disappointed and talk about how come we can't.... I have been doing everything I can to get the same resources as these classrooms, and my students love to see they are doing "the same work". My students are able to talk to their schoolmates during lunch room movement and you can hear them ask how they did something or did they see what we did. They feel like part of the school culture.
Funding this project will make a huge difference.
My students are always considered special and needy but not capable. I will be able to teach to the 21st-century skills, they hear about. They will be able to prove they're capable. We are capable, it takes longer for them to understand and apply the concepts. Sometimes it takes much longer and they need time. Having someone who will teach the concept until it is understood is what the students need as well as the resources to do that.
