My students need 14 book titles that speak to them!
Can you imagine avoiding books because you find you can never relate to them? I need books that speak to my students, most of whom are reluctant readers. Connecting with books connects you with the world.
We are a Title I public middle school and most of our students qualify for free lunch.
Over half of our students live in housing projects down the street. Many do not have books in their homes, or even a dictionary. Immersion into reading has not been a part of their lives, and yet reading opens up both the mind and heart. We are fighting ever-shortening attention spans, and reading helps settle yet stimulate the brain. Reading for learning and pleasure, improves vocabulary and writing skills that will last a lifetime.
My students need young adult (YA) literature with protagonists of all ethnicities. With a hand-chosen classroom library, I can personally match and recommend books that will appeal to my teenagers. I talk to each student, and then hand him/her a book saying "I guarantee you will like this!" I can turn even the most reluctant student on to reading, as evidenced by my students saying that they now love to read. That is the sweetest thing I can hear. I can't imagine a broader impact than turning non-readers into readers. In my class, we have daily sustained, silent reading. When I say, "Find a spot to stop," (in their silent reading book) they groan and say, "Can't we read all period?" Is that not music to your 21st Century ears? This is an informational society and in order to thrive in this world, becoming a reader is a huge start.
"Ms. R, I had never read a book on my own before I came to your class," said an 8th grade boy.
I hear this each and every year! Turning kids on to reading is my number one goal as an English teacher. Without reading, young people live in a limited realm. Connecting with books, connects you with the world.
