Who knew that leaving my school on March 13, 2020 would be the last day I would hug my students and be able to see them again? Covid19 has created such turmoil and put my Title I, inner-city school community into forced, remote learning for the remainder of the school year. There are no libraries to access computers and with stay-at-home orders, my school was forced to provide old, obsolete computers to my students that just plain don't work. Parents are frustrated, students are stressed and wanting to learn. They want some sense of normalcy and a way to connect with their teacher. This eager student of mine needs a computer, nothing fancy. My heart breaks knowing he wants to learn and is disadvantaged during a time of tragedy.
We are requesting an iPad and a rugged, protective case. This iPad will allow my student to access distance learning lessons during this pandemic and for years to come. He has been waiting patiently under stay-at-home orders to get a computer to use for the past six weeks. He needs to be able to access the online learning experiences of Flocabulary, STMath, Dreambox Math, RAZ Kids, Google coding opportunities, and virtual science investigations.
A video message sent by his mother tore into my heart as I saw him and heard his plea of, "I miss you, Miss Kenaston".
With many students thinking this pandemic time is just for TV or video games, I have a student worried about his academics. Just because he lives in an impoverished community does NOT mean he isn't deserving of all the privileges of others.
