This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school's student population comes from three different primary schools so there is an influx of new students every year. We are a high poverty and high mobility, Title I school in a small town attached to a larger school district. The school is entirely free or reduced-price lunch status.
Social/Emotional learning is being implemented in the schools through the classrooms.
One way to feel good about yourself is to create and finish a project of ones own design. There is nothing better then "I made that!" statement.
My Project
One of the concepts of Social/Emotional Learning is feeling good about yourself and others. Some students show their emotions through art and one of the most beautiful examples of art is a handmade quilt product.
A young person can hold up a finished project and state proudly "I made that!".
To do this my students will need a sewing machine along with the material and cutting board to complete student led and student made projects. They will complete a quilt of their choosing from start to finish. These projects will be cross curricular as well as social/emotional learning with math, social studies and science emphasis. The finished projects can become conversations starters among the student body.
