I am so excited to be working in a new school closer to home. Our class consists of 18 third grade students. These students come from all walks of life, and despite any hardships, they come in each morning ready to learn.
Even though my class consists of high achievers, there are some who still struggle with reading.
In Third grade, the students are expected to know how to read and now are reading to learn. The rigor is high! Each day they surprise me with their interest level on what we do read, and often refer back to previous passages, linking the new learning with something read from the past weeks.
Currently we are working on characterization and they were able to go back to two passages - one on Cleopatra and the other on Susan B. Anthony. To my joy it was they who did the linking and not me, the teacher. My goal is that every child enjoy reading!
My Project
We are requesting a subscription to Storyworks Junior magazine which will provide my students with diverse readings such as poetry, twin texts, opinion, expository, and current student friendly reading. The classroom magazine I have chosen will provide my students with multiple genres of reading that are often not readily available.
Not only will the students get to touch on poetry and drama, but they will also be reading twin texts to support their expository and/or opinion writing.
When a student has their very own magazine to read, annotate, and then take home to show a parent or guardian, it gives them ownership.
Throughout the day students are required to read curriculum purchased - which has high rigor! However, these magazines will additionally touch on the rigor expected, using current, kid friendly texts.
