My students are hardworking, passionate, and they love a challenge. They are a diverse group of eager learners who love to laugh, get messy, and work in teams. Yet, each day when I say, "time to read", I can see over half of my students sinking into their chairs. The torn and wrinkled pages of the very old books in my current library just don't get kids excited.
One way I want to encourage students to become excited about reading is to get several high-interest non-fiction books that grab their attention.
Non-fiction books will help encourage my students to explore different topics that might be of interest to them all while exposing them to high-level vocabulary words and text features. My students also love choice, what human doesn't? Supplying my students with these books and multiple options is something that I am really excited about!
My Project
My students love when they can read about things that interest them. That is why it I so important for our classroom library to reflect their many interests.
Having non-fiction books about topics that they are excited about will encourage them to read more non-fiction; helping to increase their reading comprehension and knowledge about the world.
These Smithsonian Science books are a perfect addition to our classroom. Not only will students get the opportunity to read these books, but they will also be able to use them for research projects and assignments. We can use the books when we dive into comprehension of non-fiction looking at text features and text structure. These books can be used for various lesson all throughout the year!
