My students need items to support math. Items such as pocket protectors, composition notebooks, and hands-on materials are integral to my math program.
Failure is not an option and neither is opting out. I try to create an atmosphere where each student feels confident and is not afraid to contribute to our learning. Many students do not love math and I want them to not only love it, but understand that it is used in everyday life!
My school is in an urban setting and half my class receives free lunches.
Some of them come to school not having eaten breakfast. My class this year consists of 11 special education students who need lots of support in reading, writing, and math. My school is super supportive but we cannot afford many of the items for each class and many of my students don't even come in to school with the school supplies they need because their families just can't afford it. These items I have selected will help support their needs and the needs of my students for years to come. Many students come to our school because the special education program there, so I will need to support classes in years to come. If I want my students to be strong math students and eager learners, I need to have items that will support their learning and growth.
My Project
My students use pocket protectors right now to show answers in math. It is a quick way for me to see if they can complete an answer and where I need to reteach. Dry erase markers are used with these as well. I need composition notebooks for their math journals, where they glue in real world math word problems to work on. Dividers help for taking tests, math books for me to use support re-teaching and enrichment. The manipulatives and center items help support their learning and differentiation. I took a long time deciding what would best support their needs and I believe these items will help them and will help support teaching of the common core. The number lines will help support not only fractions but when we work on coordinates on a line and start coordinates on a plane. The foam discs used with a ten frame support addition, multiplication, and fractions - the possibilities are endless!!!
My students need support in basic skills, as well as hands-on material to support their learning.
Center items will help me create a guided math program, where students are working on centers on their own, while I pull students to work in small groups. Small group work is so important in my class, as I often have half of my class being special education. These items will help take the burden off parents buying supplies, as well as me supplying items for students. Hands-on items differentiate instruction.
