Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a lively, enthusiastic bunch who attend our wonderful school that's set in an impoverished community. The majority are English Language Learners and were born to immigrants who've come from countries such as México, El Salvador, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Most of our parents have not completed their high school education, but are working hard to provide all they can for their children. My students recognize the sacrifices their parents have made and want to make the most of their education so they can have the brightest future for themselves and their families.
My Project
We are diving into the Units of Study, which were funded thanks to a previous DonorsChoose.org project! This workshop curriculum teaches students to become avid readers and writers through engaging and authentic literacy activities, where students read and write about what interests them most. My students really love this way of teaching and don't want to leave for home most days!
I am requesting tools that will help in the implementation of the Units of Study, as well as an additional Lucy Calkins' writing unit titled "Show and Tell Writing: From Labels to Pattern Books." The date stamps allow the children and me to track the development of their writing.
The flair pens are the best writing utensil for my students to use as they are strengthening their fine motor muscles, and the finger spacers and SitSpots give my students a sense of spacing both in their writing and as they're reading individually and with partners. The writing unit is designed to transform kindergartners into inventive spellers, giving them the tools and strategies they need to approximate the words that are most meaningful for them.
The Lucy Calkins' Units of Study so far have been everything I could ask for and more. It's no joke that it takes lots of work to implement, but it is worth every bit of effort as the students are learning like never before!
