"The player doesn't work, Mrs. _______!!!!" yells a student with frustration. "Mine too!" yells another student with more frustration.
One of the most popular literacy centers I have in my first grade class is Books on CD. I borrow the books with CD from my local library. The kids really enjoy listening to different stories at their own level or above their reading level. It also enables them to read non-fiction books that normally they can't read on their level. By listening to these books, they are exposed to different genres and they learn a lot. In the beginning of the year, I had bought with my own money 5 CD players and then asked some of the parents to buy their children CD players that are under $15. I had 12 CD players in December. Now I only have 3 working. They are all broken. I think because it wasn't durable enough (I bought them on sale and they are not name-brand - just cheap and affordable) to take the rigors of children using them all the time. And we all know how kids can be "not too careful" sometimes.
Sometimes I would make the broken ones work by putting down a heavy object (ex. stapler) on them because the top has been broken and the only way to make it work is to secure it down. But recently, this has not been effective.
So PLEASE HELP! My kids really really beg me to fix the players and I'm not mechanically inclined to do it. I tried but they are stubbornly un-fixable. We need good quality CD players so my students can continue to listen to good literature. Please Help!
I had told my kids about your group and they have begged me to write to you in their behalf. I totally believe in parent involvement and I had tried to get parents help out first and some of them did deliver. But now I realize that I got what I paid for.
Your help will extremely help my kids to be lifelong readers.
