My students need to move! My pencil tappers, leg bouncers, and wiggle worms need to be able to move freely during class time. Keeping their cores engaged at their seats will help them focus!
I am fortunate to share my wonderful students with a co-teacher in an inclusion classroom. This year, we have students from many different cultural and financial backgrounds. For a Title I school, we are incredibly lucky to have an amazingly supportive administrative staff and coworkers, but financially, we are limited to only a few hundred dollars for instructional supplies each year. Teaching special needs students is very rewarding, but always leaves you wanting to do even more for them. I want to provide the best possible environment for my students to meet all of their individual needs.
My Project
I love sitting at my seat all day without moving...said no 4th grader, ever. Elementary school students are walking, talking, balls of energy that never seem to run out of steam. While recess is a welcome break, students still have movement needs while they're inside the classroom that can result in disruptive behavior. Some students with special needs desperately need an outlet for hyperactive behaviors that keep them from being able to focus, despite their best efforts.
How do we address their needs to wiggle and move, and do their work at the same time?
Seats that wiggle and move right along with them! The buoy seat allows students a range of movement at their desk by engaging core muscles and giving them the ability to tilt, wobble, and swivel while they work.
My students would greatly benefit from these specialized seats because it would let them focus while meeting their mobility needs.
