My Students
I want my students to take their education seriously and be excited about learning, and most especially about reading. Research shows that building lifelong readers starts with providing students the opportunity to encounter great books, heartfelt recommendations, and a community of readers who share this passion. My school is located in a very low-income community. My students face many personal challenges and obstacles which, unfortunately, put their education at the low end of priorities. I have to jump over many hurdles to get them excited about Language Arts.
Reading books is my passion.
Over the past year, my co-teacher and I have stacked our classroom library with current, relevant, and engaging books for our students. Their interest in reading has blossomed. My goal is to have my students read 30 independent books by the end of the school year but in order to reach this goal, I need to build my library. I distribute interest surveys to the students so that I can make personal recommendations. The books I have chosen for this project are items that I know will interest many of my students and help them reach their reading goals.
My Project
These books will add diversity to our classroom library and allow students the opportunity to read current bestsellers. Students build connections with books, not worksheets. My students have expressed interest in setting reading goals for this school year; the only way to help them reach this goal is by filling our library with high-interest books.
With a vast selection of books, my students will be able to engage and improve their literacy through exposure to literature.
They will be able to engage in articulate discussions, strengthen their vocabulary, and hopefully whet their curiosity to read more.
Any little bit that gets my students excited about learning will make their lives better because it will flow into their other subject areas.
