My students are in a Title 1 school, but they do not let their poverty level define them. They are the most thoughtful, loving kids and they work so hard to learn new things! I know 1st hand about many of the hardships these children call normal and it makes me want to reach above and beyond to provide them with the best opportunities available!
When a staff member is out sick, the students run and hug them when they see that they are back at school and tell them that they missed them.
It is the most heartwarming thing to watch! I love the heart our students have!
My Project
Working with elementary students takes a strong stomach! Just picture a class of 25 smart children looking at you with open eyes, smiling, listening to the story or lesson - then you notice that several of them are touching the bottoms of their shoes and then a few minutes later they rub their eyes or put a finger in their nose or mouth.
Like I said - you need a stomach of steel because at some point those students have walked into the bathroom or played on the playground (where animals poop).
EEW! Don't get me wrong, I love animals, but their byproducts do not belong in our children's mouths.
With the use of microscopes I can teach children of all ages about the bacteria that lives around us, have them take cultures off of their shoes and hands, and then look at the results. Being able to give them personal, real results will go a long way in helping them understand the importance of hand-washing and cleanliness.
