My Students

I teach math, reading, writing, and social skills to students with special needs. My students range from kindergarten to second grade, but they all are working on foundational skills of reading, writing, and math. Working with a variety of grade levels, some students are learning the letters in their name, while some are reading fluent and working on comprehension questions.

My students are energetic and enthusiastic about all things technology!

The addition of an iPad will allow me to plan to their specific level of instruction and teach them based on their special interests.

My Project

My primary students are very motivated and engaged to use various forms of technology, and I believe an iPad would be a great addition to the classroom!

How I'd use the iPad in my class: Social skills, learning to write, letter and number identification, district curriculum, other foundational math, reading and writing skills, and lesson planning!

I currently have a first generation iPad mini that was gifted, which the students have loved using. The issue is that software for most apps is no longer supported, limiting the student's opportunities. Upgrading to a new iPad would mean using district curriculum (Starfall and iReady) in a form that would allow students with low muscle tone to participate without having to use a mouse or track-pad. Additionally, the iPad would limit the number of physical manipulative I need to purchase in my classroom, as I can use apps for digital manipulatives. I can use the iPad to create social stories (stories where I can add pictures of a student in a familiar setting to teach social skills). I also plan on using the iPad during non-student hours to help me plan and keep track of student's goals!

The Apple Pencil is weighted and pressure sensitive, which means my students can learn the effect of pressure on their "paper." For students that are avoidant to picking up a traditional pencil, this creates a wonderful opportunity for them to learn to write independently.
