Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Climb every mountain,
Ford every stream,
Follow every rainbow,
'Till you find your dream. "
The lyrics of this Julie Andrews classic ring true everyday as I struggle to find the ways to make the dreams of my students come true!
My 3rd/4th/5th/6th grade music students attend a public school in California.
They are considered high poverty and have only the barest of necessities; however, they love to learn. My students are gifted in many ways: kind, curious, eager, responsible, respectful, and talented! However, they need opportunities to grow and experience the many possibilities that life has to offer. Our school has approximately 650 students grades K-6. They come from first or second generation Californians, and for the most part, their parents have grade school education at best. Despite the odds, these students have hopes and dreams of going to college. I absolutely know they can and will with education, inspiration, opportunities, motivation, and community support. My school is filled with amazing young people with goals and dreams they haven't even thought of yet! They make me smile everyday!
My Project
I currently have the districts only music lab which houses 35 Yamaha digital keyboards. For the past three years, I have teamed with other teachers to give the opportunity of formal music instruction to as many students in our school as possible (while still teaching 4th grade!). As various groups of students have moved through, I now have various levels of student books and materials needed for each keyboard. Up until now, I have been able to keep their music on the music stand of their keyboard. However, the organization and time trying to find the correct books for each group of students has become a time management issue. As I have begun my 3rd year, I now have 3 levels of students, as well as enrichment materials and "student choice" songbooks. With these simple, yet sturdy file boxes, my students will be able to store their books on the ground near their feet. They will have easy access to any book in a moments notice. This simple addition will make a world of difference!
This donation would greatly serve the instructional time that my students receive in the music lab.
Already, there is never enough of quality fine art instruction in schools. I want to make sure that every minute is utilized to the best it can be. I want to see my kids working, practicing, performing, and learning;not fumbling through materials to find the right book and page number and so often watching books tumble to the ground because there just isn't enough space on their music stand!
