Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The children in my third grade are in need of a classroom that is comfortable and relaxing, and has all the tools for success, since they spend seven hours a day, five days a week in school. I teach in an inner city school with a high poverty rate.
Many of these families are struggling to provide the basic needs for survival on a day-to-day basis.
These loving parents and grandparents do not have the resources to provide the life-enriching experiences that so many of us take for granted. In addition, several of the children in my classroom are experiencing educational challenges due to a variety of factors, including learning disabilities, developmental delays and severe emotional issues due to circumstances beyond their control. Consequently, these children are struggling to keep up with their peers from more affluent communities. These little ones need our help and support.
My Project
My students need 100 bead rekenreks and fraction pattern blocks which will provide active learning experiences to help make everyday math concepts more concrete. Using these manipulatives will help them understand everyday math concepts and boost their self confidence when tackling projects.
Manipulatives have proven to not only help children understand the concept they are learning, but also ask questions about the topic when they are "stuck."
Using and manipulating materials help students visualize concepts, construct meaning, and integrate a more tangible understanding of abstract facts. When students are involved in hands-on projects, their motivation increases, willingness to ask question increases, volunteering information increases, enthusiasm increases and their attention to the task increases.
