Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students range from the brightest of the bright to the riders of the struggle bus. Both groups take my class because they know they will have a teacher who cares about them and loves to teach.
Anatomy Physiology attracts kids interested in becoming doctors, nurses, physical therapists, and vets, along with others who just have heard how interesting the class is.
Many of my former students work in our local hospitals as nurses, doctors, and pediatrics. Even if they choose not to pursue a career in the medical field, they will leave with a deeper knowledge of themselves and a better understanding of common misconceptions.
My Project
I think it is absolutely abhorrent that any child would go to school hungry in a country as wealthy as ours. Despite the "free lunch" program, I'm constantly being asked to share what I bring to school with my students. (And trust me, my food isn't all that great!)
Earlier this year, I asked Donors to help me give lunch to many of my students, and you did with amazing grace!
I was quickly overwhelmed with the number of students who wanted simple noodles or crackers. Worse, because of Covid, Hillsborough County is now at a 15% poverty rate!
I created a "I Forgot My Lunch" sign and have been able to give many kids food without undue embarrassment who'd otherwise go hungry. Sensing a need, I've offered to make a "to go" weekend bag for some and they acceptable gratefully.
My heart nearly broke when a few of my more affluent students contributed with items they asked their parents to purchase at Costco or BJ's.
