Our school has the largest zone in the our district, bringing in students from nearly 100 different motels, shelters, and low income housing. For many of our students, school is their place of safety and where they get at least two square meals a day, have opportunities to interact with diverse experiences, and use the latest technology to aid in their learning.
I teach 38 very energetic 6th graders.
Their struggles at home do not prevent them from being eager learners in the classroom. They are a hard working group of kids who continuously strive to rise above and prove that they can be more than the demographics shown on paper.
My Project
Currently in my 6th grade math classroom we do not have regular access to computers or any other form of technology. This means that my students only have a chance to interact with mathematical concepts through technology a couple times a year.
With the addition of these four tablets to our classroom routine, students will have the opportunity to interact with mathematical concepts presented in real world situations and through mathematical games.
Students will use the tablets daily during an assigned math station time where they will interact with math by participating in real world problem solving activities, videos, games, and interactive demonstrations. Students will also be able to access our online textbook and all the support materials provided by the program.
Students will be able to create a better understanding of how the math they are using is important to them past just passing the end of unit test. The will build skills that will help them in future careers and maybe even spark some interest in pursuing a career based on their study through technology.
