I am a Literacy Coach at an under-resourced middle school in Brooklyn, New York.
\"Mike\" is in the seventh grade.
He takes care of his two younger sisters while his parents are at work. He can cook a mean quesadilla, and works weekends in his family\'s restaurant clearing tables. In basketball, Mike hits all his free throws, and can sink a fifteen-foot jumper, no problem. He\'s the reigning checkers champion in our class.
But Mike can\'t read.
He wants to - Mike wants to read, he so badly wants to learn. But like so many of his peers who struggle with reading, Mike would rather fake his way through a seventh-grade novel than read texts that are perceived as \"baby books.\"
Engaging struggling readers with texts they can actually read is a difficult task - one that is only compounded by the fact that there is an adolescent stigma attached to reading \"baby books.\"
Fortunately, the publishing world seems to have discovered that - Eureka! - some older children need high-interest books that are on a lower reading level.
Frustrated with the utter lack of engaging lower-level texts available in school, I took a group of ten students on a trip to Barnes & Noble one afternoon. They rooted through the texts like archeaologists, carefully rummaging through the shelves.
Then, discovery! One student found an area replete with engaging series texts, and called the others over. They looked at the covers, read the backs, spoke excitedly to each other - sometimes in their native Spanish - and armed with $3.00 each, tramped to the cash register, eager to make their purchases.
I am asking for funding of a set of books that my struggling readers will crave. These books will provide me with an invaluable teaching tool that will drive my students\' learning, and push them into more challenging texts.
