This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of my kids have not been taught the value of a good book. If I can get them hooked on reading and teach them the value of "getting lost" in a good book, I can create lifelong learners that will grow up to take their kids to the library or read to them on a nightly basis.

My students have mobility issues.

Most do not make it to the library on a frequent basis. I have to bring the library to them. They are very willing to learn, but they are not natural readers that want to spend time reading just for the sake of it. I want to change that dynamic.

My Project

My students need 33 copies each of two full length novels to read during their Language Arts block. With the book Hoot, I can make make many connections to conservation, a super hot topic in today's world. With Birchbark House, I will introduce Native American life to my students and encourage them to make connections between the theme of conservation in Hoot and Native American life in Birchbark House.

My biggest challenge every year is to get kids hooked on reading--not just reading to pass a test, but reading to boost your imagination and open the world.

Once hooked, always hooked, and a great book has the power to do that.
