My Students
We are a seaside community that has been impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Our island town doesn't have a single home that was left undamaged. MANY of my students homes are still uninhabitable almost five months after the storm.
We thought that restarting school would add a sense of normalcy to the chaos that permeates our students' lives. In some ways it has.
One of the things I've noticed since we've restarted is that our kids are dealing with more than we ever expected.
My Project
Hurricane Harvey destroyed not only our school, but our school library. We are rebuilding, but until the library is completed, reading materials are somewhat limited. My plan is to create a mini library in my classroom in the interim.
My students LOVE to read. I've taught for fifteen years and have never had a group of students who want to read like this group does. Not having a library has been challenging at best.
In addition to books, I am creating in my classroom a place where students can just "hang out" and read. This is important since much of the campus is either under construction or off limits to students.
