My students need a model of the human ear, posters which illustrate the senses, a rod which vibrates and a sound demonstration kit.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have no problem identifying and defining what sound is. In fact, they probably hear my voice in their sleep as I can project clear down the hallway of my school. Sometimes it becomes necessary to vibrate my vocal cords more than I'd like to make myself heard. I teach fifth grade science in a noisy classroom in a noisy school. As my students do experiments they get excited, which causes others on my floor to close their doors. My school is in a large district not far from downtown. The kids are predominately low economic, English language learners with a few special education students mixed in. Many parents are supportive of the school but have a difficult time with the language barrier.
One of the biggest challenges my students face is passing the state mandated exams in order to be promoted to the next level. It is my responsibility to teach them enough science in a few months (in English) to have them pass the science portion. Their biggest hurdle is reading. At times I think I should have been a taxi driver but I persist. I've been at this for over 20 years so it's too late to turn back.
I have to get across the concept of sound. Initially I use a drawing of the ear and the Internet to explain how vibrations move in waves through the various parts. My request for an ear model would make it a much clearer demonstration. Rather than banging on the lab tables to show how sound travels, the sound demonstration kit would be a much better tool. The singing rod is described in the catalog as being "amazingly loud" which will not only teach the concepts but grab their attention without my having to "project".The posters will enhance their learning by being on the bulletin board during the entire physical science unit.
The tin can telephones are a favorite demonstration of mine to teach the idea of sound waves. The ear model, kit, rod, and posters would greatly enhance this by adding clarity and a more meaningful chance for further experimentation. By funding this proposal you are giving a group of students a better chance to be successful and hopefully allowing their teacher to be able to open her classroom door again.
Thank you.
