Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Let me tell you about my students. I have nine very eager-to-learn students. Two are from Nicaragua and they walked from Nicaragua to the border of this "great country," as they say. It took them months to get to the border. At night they would lay under the stars and dream about their future in America. They wondered if the people in America were going to be friendly towards them.
Two of my other students are brother and sister. She has been in my classroom since the beginning of the semester and her brother arrived yesterday. When he arrived he was a little nervous; he tried to smile but it was an awkward smile. She put him at ease and told him to not be afraid. He sat next to her. My whole class welcomed him.
The other five are also learning English. They are completely focused and determined to conquer the English language. They never miss a day of school because they are afraid of missing new learning.
Technology literacy is an essential skill. My students don't have prior knowledge when it comes to technology. With the Chromebooks, I'm helping them become college and career-ready by giving them exposure to technology. They use technology to learn their new language and at the same time they learn how to use technology. My students feel less because they don't know how to use technology. I want to give them the confidence that they can use technology just like everyone else can.
In Their Own Words
The first goal I am trying to accomplish with this project is to have accessibility to places where I can learn English. I feel that my teacher can lead me to places where I can learn to read, write, speak, and listen to English. My second goal is to learn to use technology.
I will make the most of leadership opportunity. Once I learn or maybe at the same time while I learn, I can help other students like me to use the computer. Not knowing how to use the computer is very frighting. At the beginning, you have to pretend like you know, but you really don't. I want to help others.
This project is important to me because I want to be like everyone else. If the teacher says to go to a certain site, I want to know how to do it. Right now I don't know how. I feel lost. This project is important to my school community because I want to belong. I want to be a part of it.
