Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Working with students who grow up in an area of extreme poverty is an incredible challenge and gift that I get to experience each day. I am incredibly lucky to have been given the opportunity to work with such a diverse group of learners. About 40% of the students at our school are English Language Learners, coming from many different countries around the world.
Urban school students often do not have access to the resources they need to truly engage in meaningful learning experiences.
100% of the students at my school receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of our students do not have access to books or computers with internet access. The needs at our school are extremely high, but our students have so much potential to succeed.
My Project
As wonderful as my students are, they often show up to class unprepared to engage in the learning activities for day. I often hear "I Don't Have Anything to Write With" the fist five minutes of every class from quite a few students.
Every minute of learning matters in the middle school science classroom.
I want my students to be able to enter the classroom and be ready to learn as soon as class starts. It is my job to support my students and ensure that their learning time is maximized. In order to the this, I often have to provide them with pencils, highlighters and other materials. I frequently buy these supplies for students with my own money. They would certainly benefit from any support that you could offer them.
