Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year, I will be teaching a 4th and 5th grade combo class. My students for this upcoming year are Second Language Learners and I am planning on incorporating many techniques to ensure they get the support they need. Many of my students do not have technology at home, and I am trying to help prepare them for the future. Being at an inner-city school, these students may not always have all of the necessary resources or opportunities, but they work together as a class to make the best with what they are given. As their teacher, I am working to create a safe and engaging environment to help these students see the perks of education.
I am eager to help these students progress with their reading, fluency, and mathematics skills.
As I will be teaching English Language Learners, having engaging lessons is important to help them with the classwork. I would like to create a classroom environment where students' creativity is encouraged and their voices and opinions are heard and considered. Having extra technology in the class will ensure that creativity is being incorporated while they are still working on their language development.
My Project
Having headphones in my class will be so helpful to the class for various reasons. These headphones will allow my students to work independently on their online reading programs without disrupting those around them. The program requires students to listen to various texts and phrases, which can cause others to become distracted or unable to hear their own prompts. These particular headphones also include a microphone, which will allow my students to do online activities to help improve their speaking skills as well. Since my students are English Language Learners (ELLs), they need as much practice with speaking and listening to fluent English. There are multiple websites and programs I have signed my class up for that require the use of microphones so they can practice their learned skills. Lastly, there are many games and activities that my students have access to to help with their fluency in math (including Kahn Academy, Wolfram Alpha, XtraMath, etc.). Headphones allow students to all work at their own pace and allow me to differentiate learning by having each student watch videos that provide specific support to the student using them.
