My students need access to these 2 iPads for interesting and exciting independent, differentiated instruction, so they can learn English and academic skills.
Can you imagine being five years old, not knowing what a cow says, or which apple is the red one? By the way, what is an apple?
My students come from a very low socioeconomic background and qualify for free lunches.
There are very few intact family units with a mother and father in the home. At least half of my students come from homes that do not speak English as their first language, and they come to kindergarten without speaking English or understanding simple words or phrases. In contrast I have students that speak English, but they have never had a story read to them and they could not find the red crayon in the assorted box of crayons. My students need to discover a need and a desire to learn about the world around them, as well as the love of academic knowledge.
My Project
iPads are a fabulous learning tool, cleverly disguised as a fun computer game! The kids have a great time "playing" on the iPad while they are learning and they don't even know it! Kindergarten students need to be able to read and write, add and subtract by the time they leave kindergarten. It is my goal to give my students every opportunity to be successful in school. It is my job to foster the love of learning, and I can do this by giving every chance to my students to engage in exciting and educational opportunities.
Students of all levels can work on needed skills with individual and immediate feedback.
There are hundreds of creative applications that provide scaffolding if the child doesn't answer correctly, the program helps the child get to the right answer. The iPad offers the students an opportunity of early intervention on necessary skills with immediate feedback. The programs are geared to the skills necessary for beginning learners as well as those students that are ready to take off!
