Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a school social worker in a low income school, I see many of my students facing academic and social challenges. Many do not have adequate housing and struggle with food insecurity. They are often cared for by older siblings while their parents work long hours, resulting in limited opportunities to engage with peers in the community.
Many of my students are newcomers to the United States and have limited English language proficiency.
My students are eager to learn and seek acceptance and friendship. They face challenges not only understanding the language, but also understanding the culture.
My Project
Books are powerful! They can connect people from all over the world through stories of shared experiences. They carry messages of love, compassion, togetherness, giving, understanding. Books have a way of capturing how we feel when we don't know how to put it into words.
Many of my newcomer students are Spanish speaking only.
They need books in a language they can understand and to see themselves reflected in the stories they read.
My hope is to build a library with books in Spanish that focus on feelings, different cultures, the power of giving, and hard work. My students are dealing with the challenges of a new culture, leaving their families behind, making new friends, new customs...it's important for them to find a piece of themselves in the books they read and that they too belong here.
