My students need the NutriGrain Bars to help them start their day and alleviate their hunger until lunch. It helps avoid their headaches, stomachaches. Above all, it allows them the opportunity to focus and LEARN.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Students at our school get admission to our school based on a lottery . Our students at our school are a mixture of the "haves" and the "have nots". The rich and the poor. Many of our students come from the surrounding neighborhood as well as the outlying suburbia. They ride buses, they walk and they carpool. Few have whole breakfasts, some have our school breakfasts, and some grab "whatever" they can at the corner store on their way in.
A healthy student learn better.
Hungry students have stomach aches. Hungry students develop headaches. Hungry students get emotional and angry and reactive. Hungry students cannot focus on learning.....
My Project
I have been purchasing an bringing in snacks for the last months and years. Some days, my students will see me eating my breakfast or my lunch and they say "that smells good!" What I think they are really saying is, "can I have some?" I usually will share my meal because I get such a good feeling when I see the look on their face when they taste whatever it is I have shared.
Some of my students need a healthy snack and they look to me to give it to them.
I want to be that person, however financially it is difficult to accommodate as many students as I would like to at times so the quality of my snacks have gone down and I don't always have them for students when they need them the most.
Healthy snacks improves learning, it keeps their blood sugar from spiking and tanking (basically level) and that keeps a student nice and focused.
